Why you should give Cowboys and Aliens another chance

The stench of awful Michael Bay’s Transformers shlock unfortunately seemed to have still been in the air of theaters when Cowboys and Aliens was released last year since both the critics and general public seemed to simply write this movie off in the same category. Genre blending is not something that is going to be pulled off easily, however this film did do just that, and it was done very well.

It seems people were going into this movie with their minds already made up on the idea of genre blending being played right in the middle of something extremely goofy and silly or completely straight. A good example of this would be the 1999 film Wild Wild West where it seemed the filmmakers didn’t even know what kind of movie they were making, seeing as the final film was an unorganized mix of Action, Comedy, and SCI FI, all taking place in the realm of a western. Cowboys and Aliens does exactly what a good film should do no matter what genre, by setting a tone at the beginning of the film, and keeping it consistent throughout the whole movie. The characters act appropriately to the things that happen around them, and the action scenes are used sparingly, where as most other movies of this type would blow them out of proportion. It’s good to see a sort of big budget Hollywood movie entertain in a way that’s not dumb or pandering like most of them do in this era of films.

While the film itself is not perfect, nor is it incredibly complicated and smart, it is a solid movie from beginning to end, which is about the only think movie goers can hope for when it comes to these types of movies. If you enjoy films where the subject matter seems cheesy but is played completely straight then you will probably like Cowboys and Aliens, however if you want to see a film were Will Smith is a wise cracking cowboy who knocks out aliens in one punch, you will not like this movie.

Normally the Academy gets a few wrong, but I can never remember them flat out ignoring great films and performances before. This list alone almost beats the actual nominations.

Prediction: This could be one of the worst Oscars ever, which is a shame considering 2011 was a great year in film.

5 Great Television Shows Currently On Netflix’s Watch Instantly

1. Breaking Bad (Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul)

Arguably the best dramatic television series ever made, features the brilliant Bryan Cranston as a struggling high school teacher who decides to manufacture meth after being diagnosed with cancer. Everything about this series is phenomenal, it’s serialistic structure makes the show incredibly addicting.

2. Twin Peaks (Kyle MacLachlan)

Currently, Twin Peaks is the only David Lynch project on “Watch Instantly,” but it sure packs a punch. A series that was ahead of its time, but just like Lynch’s other works it’s a little out there, but if you are patient, the outcome is remarkably rewarding.

3. Party Down (Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, and Ken Marino)

The series follows a bunch of wannabe actors/writers who work as caterers in order to pay the bills. Party Down features a tremendously funny cast, a great guest star every week, and smart writing. Let’s just say there is a reason everyone wants to see a reunion movie.

4. Parks and Recreation (Amy Poehler, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, and Aziz Ansari)

Original thought to be riding the mockumentary coattails of The Office, Parks and Recreation has blossomed into one of the best comedies on television. Its ensemble comedic cast is overwhelming with talent and your favorite character may not have a storyline every week, but overall, the series is brilliantly funny.

5. Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey is a British import and a period piece. Despite all of that, the show manages to make enthralling storylines with an ensemble cast. Everyone I know who has started watching the series has loved it.

1. The Graduate (Dustin Hoffman)

A smart and incredible coming of age story set to the music of Simon and Garfunkel. The Graduate is a must-see for any film fan or student. You will not be disappointed.

2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Jack Nicholson)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is arguably Jack Nicholson’s greatest performance. The film depicts a man trying to escape prison time by going to a mental institution instead. One of only three films ever to receive the Big 5 Oscar wins (It Happened One Night and Silence of the Lambs being the other two). The film has aged a little but is still one of the greatest movies ever made.

3. Punch-Drunk-Love (Adam Sandlerand Phillip Seymour Hoffman)

I realize Adam Sandler has worn out his welcome to almost every smart moviegoer, but Paul Thomas Anderson does a fantastic job of handling Sandler. A rare movie that makes the viewers feel the exact emotion that Sandler has throughout the entire film.

4. The Vicious Kind (Adam Scott and JK Simmons)

The Vicious Kind is a fantastic indie film about a family with some serious issues. The film’s minimalistic style keeps you guessing until the very end. Adam Scott gives a tremendous performance as a man who trusts nobody and will cross anybody. Scott’s stellar dramatic performance may help his viewers of his comedic roles in Party Down and Parks and Recreation realize how talented this man as an actor.

5. Brick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)

Brick is modern day Shakespearean tale of a high school detective looking for the truth behind a classmate’s murder. JGL gives a great performance and the film is incredibly intelligent from beginning to end.
